Episode 41: How Oakland Is Tackling the Reading Crisis (ft. Lakisha Young, Dirk Tillotson, and Kareem Weaver)

u003cpu003eIn this episode, you’ll hear from Oakland activists Lakisha Young, Dirk Tillotson, and Kareem Weaver about the Literacy for All campaign, which is described as going beyond focusing on “K-3 literacy outcomes” and also targets increasing the literacy of the whole family. As part of Black History Month, this newly formed coalition uses board meetings as an opportunity for parents to lay out their priorities, air grievances with the status quo, and make their voices heard. And what are they talking about? Literacy. Did you know that fewer than thirty percent of black and brown children in the United States are reading at their grade level? And this is a generational problem. Parents don’t necessarily know how to advocate for their children. That’s where Literacy for All steps in. Listen in to hear these amazing activists discuss how Oakland is tackling the reading crisis, how the NAACP got involved in illiteracy, and how to know if your child is reading on grade level.u0026nbsp;u003c/pu003e u003cdiv class=u0022hs-embed-wrapper hs-fullwidth-embedu0022 data-service=u0022html5-playeru0022 data-responsive=u0022trueu0022 style=u0022position: relative; overflow: hidden; width: 100%; height: auto; padding: 0px; min-width: 256px; display: block; margin: auto;u0022u003eu003cdiv class=u0022hs-embed-content-wrapperu0022u003eu003cdiv style=u0022position: relative; overflow: hidden; max-width: 100%; padding-bottom: 56.25%; margin: 0px;u0022 data-mce-style=u0022position: relative; overflow: hidden; max-width: 100%; padding-bottom: 56.25%; margin: 0px;u0022u003eu003ciframe title=u0022Libsyn Playeru0022 style=u0022position: absolute; top: 0px; left: 0px; width: 100%; height: 100%; border: none;u0022 src=u0022//html5-player.libsyn.com/embed/episode/id/14782892/height/90/theme/custom/thumbnail/no/direction/backward/render-playlist/no/custom-color/c1401f/u0022 height=u002290u0022 width=u0022100%u0022 scrolling=u0022nou0022 allowfullscreen=u0022allowfullscreenu0022 xml=u0022langu0022 data-mce-src=u0022//html5-player.libsyn.com/embed/episode/id/14782892/height/90/theme/custom/thumbnail/no/direction/backward/render-playlist/no/custom-color/c1401f/u0022 data-mce-style=u0022position: absolute; top: 0px; left: 0px; width: 100%; height: 100%; border: none;u0022u003eu003c/iframeu003eu003c/divu003eu003c/divu003eu003c/divu003e u003ch1u003eEpisode Details:u003c/h1u003e u003culu003e u003cliu003eParent responses to child literacy levels in the United Statesu003c/liu003e u003cliu003eWhy childhood illiteracy in the US is in the spotlight todayu003c/liu003e u003cliu003eHow the NAACP is involved in child literacyu003c/liu003e u003cliu003eHow gentrification affects literacyu003c/liu003e u003cliu003eHow to know if your child is reading on grade levelu003c/liu003e u003cliu003eHow to help your child readu003c/liu003e u003cliu003eHow to help your child read when you are illiterateu003c/liu003e u003cliu003eWhat schools need to be doing to mitigate the effects of COVID on educationu003c/liu003e u003cliu003eHow schools should be teaching literacy during COVIDu003c/liu003e u003cliu003eHow parents can advocate for their kidsu003c/liu003e u003c/ulu003e [spp-tweet tweet=u0022“The system is designed for the set of results that it consistently delivers.” – Dirk Tillotsonu0022] u003ch1u003eLinks Mentioned:u003c/h1u003e u003culu003e u003cliu003eu003ca href=u0022https://oaklandreach.org/u0022 target=u0022_blanku0022 rel=u0022noopener noreferreru0022u003eOakland Reachu003c/au003eu003c/liu003e u003cliu003eu003ca href=u0022https://twitter.com/TheOaklandREACHu0022 target=u0022_blanku0022 rel=u0022noopener noreferreru0022u003e@TheOaklandREACHu003c/au003eu003c/liu003e u003cliu003eu003ca href=u0022https://www.facebook.com/theoaklandreach/u0022 target=u0022_blanku0022 rel=u0022noopener noreferreru0022u003eThe Oakland Reach Facebooku003c/au003eu003c/liu003e u003cliu003eu003ca href=u0022https://greatschoolvoices.org/u0022 target=u0022_blanku0022 rel=u0022noopener noreferreru0022u003eGreat School Voicesu003c/au003eu003c/liu003e u003cliu003eu003ca href=u0022https://www.facebook.com/greatschoolvoices/u0022 target=u0022_blanku0022 rel=u0022noopener noreferreru0022u003eGreat School Voices Facebooku003c/au003eu003c/liu003e u003cliu003eu003ca href=u0022https://twitter.com/dirktillotsonu0022 target=u0022_blanku0022 rel=u0022noopener noreferreru0022u003e@dirktillotsonu003c/au003eu003c/liu003e u003cliu003eu003ca href=u0022https://oaklandnaacp.org/u0022 target=u0022_blanku0022 rel=u0022noopener noreferreru0022u003eOakland NAACPu003c/au003eu003c/liu003e u003c/ulu003e [spp-tweet tweet=u0022“We were checking in with our families and asking them what keeps them up at night and they were consistently saying reading.” – Lakisha Youngu0022]
